Working with BetterHelp? Where Joy fits

BetterHelp brings you clients. Your own practice is still yours to build. Here is how the two fit together, and where Joy fits in your working day.

First 20 sessions free. No credit card needed.

The short version

There is no shortage of opinions about therapy platforms right now. This page is not one of them. It is a practical answer to a practical question: if part of your week runs on BetterHelp, where does a tool like Joy belong?

The answer starts with a distinction. BetterHelp is a door: it brings clients to you, bills them, and hosts the sessions. Your own practice is what you build on the other side of every door: the clients you are responsible for yourself, wherever they found you. Joy is built as the home for your whole working day: the diary that holds every hour, the prep, and the place your notes get written, for platform sessions and your own alike. The finished record then lives wherever it should: your own clients' notes stay in Joy, and notes for platform work go wherever the platform requires. The rest of this page is that answer in full.

The portfolio week is normal now

Plenty of UK counsellors and therapists no longer work one job. A typical week might hold some platform hours, a few private clients, perhaps an agency or EAP contract. BetterHelp says over 5,000 of its therapists are based in the UK, so if your week looks like this, you are in plenty of company.

And the door does its job well. Clients arrive matched to you through a questionnaire, billing is handled, sessions and messaging run inside one system. Finding clients is one of the bigger challenges in private practice, especially in the early years of building one, and the platform takes that off your plate. In exchange, it sets the rates, and its matching decides how many new clients come your way. Thousands of therapists take that deal with open eyes, often exactly because it removes the part of practice-building they like least.

Where BetterHelp ends and your practice begins

The boundary is clearer than most people say out loud. On the platform, the people you see are BetterHelp's members. The platform bills them, pays you, and asks that your sessions and messaging with them happen inside its system. Its published therapist terms also ask therapists not to solicit platform clients for therapy outside it, unless that is clinically necessary or BetterHelp has agreed. Those are the US and Australia terms, which are the public ones; the UK version may differ in detail. None of this is sinister. It is their door, they built it, and they paid for the marketing that brought each client through it.

But it has one consequence worth saying plainly: those hours live in their system, and if you ever leave, the clients stay. A useful test for any hour in your week is this. If you closed your laptop tomorrow, which clients could still find you? The ones who could are your practice. That is not a reason to leave the platform. It is just worth knowing.

Where the line sits: Joy does not connect to BetterHelp, import platform clients, or offer a way around anyone's terms. Where your finished notes must live for platform work is between you and the platform. What happens before that, speaking your thoughts, drafting, getting the wording right, has always been yours.

The admin that is still yours

On the platform, the billing and the matching are done for you. The notes never are: writing up what happened is yours, whichever door the client came through. And so is the day around your sessions: the diary, remembering where you left off, the reminders, the to-dos, for platform clients and your own alike.

That is the gap Joy fills. Built for one therapist rather than an enterprise:

Notes done before you leave

Speak, and Joy drafts the session note from what you actually said. You read and approve every note. The evening stays yours.

A diary that briefs you

Calendar with a recap waiting before each client arrives, reminders, and to-dos pulled straight from your notes.

Built to be trusted

Your clients' words are hosted in the EU and never used to train AI. Not with consent, not de-identified, not at all.

One flat £25 + VAT a month, however many sessions you run. Your first 20 sessions are free, no credit card, and no clock on them: they never expire. If your own caseload is two clients today, Joy simply waits with you while it grows.

So, side by side, the jobs look like this

A note from Charlotta

Hi, I'm Charlotta, one of Joy's co-founders. I have built healthcare technology for over a decade, on both sides of the table: as CEO of companies that deliver care themselves, and as the vendor behind the tools they run on.

This page exists because more and more therapists run a week split between a platform and a practice of their own, and almost everything written about that split is a fight about the platform. We are not interested in the fight. A door is a door and a home is a home, and you are allowed to value both. What we care about is that the rest of your working day gets the same quality of care the platform gives its part.

If this page leaves a question open, email me at hello@joy.day. I read everything that comes in there.

Quick answers

Can I use Joy for my BetterHelp clients?

Yes, for writing the note itself. Speak for a minute, read the draft, approve it. For platform sessions, the finished note then goes wherever the platform requires, and following those requirements is your responsibility as the practitioner. Joy does not connect to BetterHelp or import platform clients. For your own clients, Joy holds the finished record too.

Does Joy replace BetterHelp?

No. They do different jobs. BetterHelp brings clients to you and hosts the sessions. Joy runs the day around them: the notes, the diary, the reminders and the to-dos, for platform clients and your own alike, whichever door they found you through.

I only see a couple of private clients alongside my platform work. Is Joy worth it yet?

Try it and see. Your first 20 sessions with Joy are free, no credit card, and there is no clock on them, so two clients a week means about ten weeks of free sessions. Joy is £25/month + VAT after that, flat, however many sessions you run.

Does Joy train AI on client data?

No. Joy never uses session notes or client data to train AI, on any plan. There is no opt-out setting because there is nothing to opt out of.

Where is Joy's data hosted?

Session data in Joy is hosted in the EU. Joy is built by Joy Solutions AB, a Swedish company, and complies with GDPR and the UK Data Protection Act 2018. Under UK GDPR you are the data controller for your own clients' records and Joy acts as your processor, with a standard data processing agreement you can keep on file.

Give your own practice a home

Your first 20 sessions are free. If it is not for you, nothing to cancel.

No credit card needed. Takes 30 seconds.
